Man Admits Guilt In Robberies, But No Apologies

CROWN POINT, Ind. (Post-Tribune) ― Bryan Scott Lucas admitted he committed eight robberies armed with a knife, but never apologized for his crimes.

"I'm not here to give you any excuses,'' the Gary man told Lake Superior Court Judge Thomas Stefaniak Jr. "I'm not going to say I'm sorry for what I've done."

Originally facing 143 years behind bars for the vitamin and cigarette store robberies from Nov. 21, 2007, to Dec. 10, 2007, Lucas pointed out Wednesday the 40-year sentence he'd agreed to when he admitted his guilt in October -- 20 years with good behavior -- was a long time.

Between Nov. 21 and Dec. 10, Lucas robbed the GNC stores in Schererville, Munster and Hobart; the Vitamin Shoppe in Hobart; Game Stop in Munster; Thornton's in Hobart; Smoke Shop in Hobart; and Moksha Tobacco USA in Hammond.

Lucas said a heroin addiction drove him to commit the crimes with his father, Earl Lucas, 57, also of Gary, who is serving a 42-year sentence for seven robberies and a theft charge as the getaway driver.

"Heroin is the devil," Lucas, 30, a former personal trainer, said.
