South Suburban Family Prepares For Home Ownership

CHICAGO (CBS) ― A Riverdale family is taking its first official step toward home ownership.

Carla Buchanan broke ground on her Habitat for Humanity house Saturday morning. It should be ready in November.

Between now and then, Buchanan will be putting hundreds of hours of sweat equity into the project.

Habitat selected the single, working mother of three, from a field of about 20 applicants.

"They're just perfect -- good working family, has a great need," said David Tracy of Habitat for Humanity.

"It's a long process," said volunteer Ted Regan.

"It was just amazing, I'm so excited," Buchanan said.

She's excited to be a first-time homeowner. CBS 2 will be right there with her, following the progress of the construction. Volunteers from the CBS 2 team are going to help build Buchanan's home as well.
