Text Message Threats Close High School In Gurnee
Police: No Incidents Have Stemmed From Threats
GURNEE, Ill. (STNG) ―
Students sending out threatening rumors via text messaging prompted Warren Township High School in north suburban Gurnee to close Friday. Police were asked to investigate.
There have been no incidents stemming from these threats and they remain under investigation, according to a press release from the Gurnee Police Department
The school sent a message to parents through its rapid communications systems around 10:52 a.m. Friday morning warning them about the rumors and letting them know students were safe, said Carolyn Waller, a spokeswoman for District 121.
"We wanted to send a message to parents to let them know their kids are safe," Waller said. "We had a rumor circulating among students at the Almond Campus. There were students threatening other students. A lot of text messaging was going on. We decided we better contact the police department."
Police and school officials did not go into the specifics of the content of the text messages, which are under investigation.
As a precautionary measure school officials canceled classes at the Almond Campus around noon for the rest of the day.
