Weekend of Gunfire Leaves 2 Dead

Shootings launch a number of police investigations

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― The weekend has not come to an end, but gunfire has been prevalent around Chicagoland, leaving two dead and forcing multiple police investigations.

On the city's South Side, a man died after he was shot in the back by two men who were chasing him early Sunday.

Shortly before 1 a.m., police responded to shots fired at 4937 S. Langley Ave. and found a man who had been shot in the back.

Witnesses told police two men had been chasing him when shots rang out and he fell to the ground, police said.

The victim, identified as Rance Mack, 44, of 5628 S. Prairie Ave., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, was taken to the University of Chicago Hospitals where he was pronounced dead at 1:35 a.m.

And a teen was fatally shot in the head on the Far South Side in the Washington Heights neighborhood Saturday night in what apparently was an attempted armed robbery, authorities said.

About 9:15 p.m., the victim, Dequarius Cannon, 17, and another person were sitting in a car at 105th and Peoria streets when someone approached on foot and demanded valuables from them, according to police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak.

Cannon, who was in the driver's seat, was shot in the left temple, Kubiak said.

The other person in the car then grabbed the wheel and sped away, driving a few blocks away to the 10700 block of South Green Street, where Cannon lived, and called for an ambulance, Kubiak said.

Cannon, of 10734 S. Green St., was pronounced dead at 12:25 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. The shooting happened at 10528 S. Peoria St., according to the medical examiner's office.

Calumet Area Detectives are investigating.

Another man was shot in his back in the Northwest Side neighborhood of Logan Square early Sunday.

The 25-year-old victim was on the street when he suffered a gunshot wound to his lower back on 2112 N. Lawndale Avenue at 1:45 a.m., Chicago police News Afffairs Officer Hector Alfaro said. The man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in "stable" condition, Alfaro said.

Another male was shot in his back in the West Side Little Village neighborhood Saturday morning.

Police responded to a male shot in the back in the 2800 block of West 25th Street at 1:15 a.m., according to Police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro. The male, whom Alfaro believes is an adult, was taken in fair condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Police officers responding to a call of shots fired on a South Side street early Sunday found a man dead with a gunshot wound to the face.

About  2:35 a.m. officers responded to a call of shots fired on the 6300 block of South Rockwell Street, according to police News Affairs.

They found a man between 20 and 30 years old unresponsive on the street, with a gunshot wound to his face. Additional details, along with a possible motive, were unknown early Sunday.

Police also traded gunfire with a mentally ill elderly man Sunday morning on the Far South Side.

The incident occurred when police responded to a disturbance call at 134th Street and Brandon Avenue at 8:04 a.m, according to South Chicago District Sgt. Marina Mosquera.

The family of a 65-year-old mentally ill man had made the call and were requesting police escort the man, who had become violent, to a hospital, Mosquera said. The man fired shots at police, who returned fire.

No one was struck by gunfire. No one was injured, Mosquera said.

The man was taken into police custody, Mosquera said.

Gunfire was also exchanged between an off-duty Metra police officer and two gunmen who opened fire on his car Saturday night on the Near West Side, officials said.

The off-duty officer was en route to work in his personal vehicle when somebody fired shots at him near West Jackson Boulevard and North Washtenaw Street about 9:30 p.m., Metra spokesman Tom Miller said.

According to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer, the off-duty Metra officer was sitting in his vehicle on the 2700 block of West Jackson Boulevard when a vehicle drove by and shot out his rear driver's side window. This prompted the officer to return gunfire.

No injuries were reported, Greer said. There were allegedly two people in the offending vehicle. The motive was not immediately known, Greer said.

The officer -- who has been employed by the Metra Police Department for four years and has prior police experience -- works at the Grand and Western Metra station, Miller said. Chicago Police and Metra police are investigating.
