A night out on the town turned deadly when someone opened fire in a nightclub in South Suburban Chicago Heights.
CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports that the Cook County Medical Examiner's office says a man in his 20s died in the shooting. Patrons at the club say they were just out to have a good time last night when gunfire sent them scrambling.
Witnesses sobbed in the parking lot outside the Esoteric Night Club in Chicago Heights. The wounded limped to a waiting ambulance.
At about 1:30 a.m., witnesses say a fight broke out between two people at the club, and one of them opened fire.
"We were all dancing, having a good time," said witness Natashia Hedrick. "Next thing I know, people just started fighting. They went outside. We heard gunshots. They came back inside the club shooting. Everybody was just running every which way trying to get out. Trying to get safe and when we came out here we just saw a man on the ground."
Chicago Heights Police say a man in his 20s was killed in the incident. Another man in his 20s is considered a suspect in the case, but has not been charged.
And later - a detective working the case got a call from his wife who was frightened when she heard noise in her trash cans outside. Police responded to the home and say they found a man hiding inside. We're told it happened about a mile from the nightclub - but there's no confirmation the two cases are connected.
