Gunman Killed In Standoff With Police

CHICAGO (STNG) ― An autopsy Sunday has revealed a man shot by police in a standoff at a Southeast Side auto body shop Saturday night died from multiple gunshot wounds.

About 7:50 p.m., police responded to a report of a robbery in progress in the 9600 block of South Ewing Avenue and a person inside refused to come out, police said.

The man reportedly took three hostages and when police responded to the scene, he began firing shots at responding officers, police News Affairs Officer David Banks said. Police returned fire, and the man then "succumbed to his injuries," he said.

Rigoberto Lopez, 24, of 10319 S. Muskegon Ave., died in a police-shooting at 9647 S. Ewing Ave., according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Lopez was pronounced dead on the scene at 2:24 a.m., the spokesman said.

Lopez died from multiple gunshot wounds, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said. His death has been ruled a homicide.

Independent Police Review Authority Chief Administrator Ilana Rosenzweig said Chicago Police did shoot somebody at the scene. A witness reported hearing "two or three shots" during the incident.

No one else was injured, police said.

A witness said the attempted robbery and ensuing standoff happened at a body shop. Sound City is listed at 9647 S. Ewing Ave.
