Groucho Marx once said he wouldn't be a member of any club that would have anyone like him for a member. But he might reconsider if he heard about the honor bestowed on more than 4,400 lookalikes in Grant Park.
Chicagoans set a Guinness World Record last month when they donned Groucho Marx noses and glasses en masse as they gathered to watch the classic Marx Brothers movie "Duck Soup" in Grant Park.
The Chicago Outdoor Film Festival and the Goodman Theatre partnered in an effort to set the record, by encouraging people to come dressed in Groucho masks on July 21.
A total of 4,436 people came to Grant Park in Groucho masks that evening. The previous record was 4,077 people on July 9, 2007, in Missouri, according to the Mayor's Office of Special Events.
"We are a city of many firsts, and I hope this is one of many records yet to be broken in the City of Chicago. I would also like to congratulate and thank the Goodman Theatre for the idea and the Mayor's Office of Special Events for their diligence," Mayor Richard M. Daley said in a news release.
The Goodman Theatre is keeping the Marx Brothers theme going next month. Beginning Sept. 18, the theater at 170 N. Dearborn St. will stageĀ
a major revival of "Animal Crackers," the Marx Brothers Broadway hit and classic film, with Chicagoan Joey Slotnick playing the role originated by Groucho Marx.
