'Groucho Bandit' Suspected In 9 Bank Robberies

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― The FBI is asking for the public's help in finding a serial bank robbed dubbed the "Groucho Bandit" because of the fake mustache he's worn while robbing as many as nine banks on the North Side over the past six weeks.

In the most-recent robbery, Saturday at the Chase Bank branch at 1240 W. Belmont Ave., the man entered the bank and approached the teller. He claimed to be armed and threatened the employee with harm if his demands were not met.
After he got an undisclosed amount of cash, the robber fled on foot, disappearing into the passing crowd, according to a Monday release from the Chicago FBI office. As in the prior robberies, no weapon was displayed and no injuries reported.
The "Groucho Bandit" is described as a white or Hispanic male, between 40 and 50, 5-foot-6 to 6 feet tall, with dark hair and dark eyes, the release said. He wears a baseball-type cap and a fake Groucho Marx-type mustache.
Anyone recognizing the man or having information about the robberies should call the FBI at (312) 421-6700.
