Community Holds Vigil For Slain Grandmother
Maggie Browder Killed Early Monday Morning In Her Own Home
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
Activists and local community leaders gathered Wednesday afternoon on the street where 73-year-old Maggie Browder was shot to death this week.
CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker reports that Browder, a grandmother whom everyone called "Mama Browder," was shot early Monday morning in her own home, in the Victory Heights neighborhood, while she looked out the window to see who had rung her doorbell.
CeaseFire, an anti-gun violence organization, sponsored the vigil, which concluded at about 6 p.m. Wednesday evening. Browder's family and neighbors and local politicians gathered to pray and express their outrage over the shooting of an innocent woman.
Relatives asked Wednesday afternoon for help finding the killer.
"She was a lovely lady, ain't did nothing to nobody, always tried to help people," said the victim's husband, Hilton Browder. "If she could she would help. She was a good, church-going, lovely lady."
"You took an angel away from us," said Browder's daughter, Sarita Brown. "And we would like justice for this person to be found and we want something done speedily."
Authorities believe the shooter may have been looking for someone connected to the family.
