Original Goose Island Brew Pub To Close

Beer Company Says Rents In Clybourn Corridor Are Now Too High

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Beer drinkers have been bellying up to the original Goose Island Brewery and Bar on the western edge of the Lincoln Park neighborhood for two decades, but now it's going belly up.

Goose Island, makers of Honker's Ale, Hex Nut Brown, 312 and other popular brews, has had its main brew pub at 1800 N. Clybourn Ave. since the beer company was founded in 1988.

But now the company says rents in the neighborhood have been rising so fast, it cannot afford to stay open anymore.

The brew pub will close when its current lease expires at the end of the year. The Goose Island brewpub at 3535 N. Clark St. just south of Wrigley Field, and the brewery at 1800 W. Fulton St., will both remain open.

The original Goose Island brew pub opened as part of the 1800 Clybourn mall, which was converted from a former Turtle Wax factory and also included the Remains Theatre company, Barbara's Bookstore, a pool hall and a miniature golf course, among other specialty and boutique stores.

The mall was demolished in 1994 and replaced with a strip mall anchored by a Bed, Bath and Beyond, but Goose Island was spared from demolition and remained open.
