About 9:20 a.m. Thursday, police responded to a hit-and-run crash at 17910 Halsted St., according to Homewood police Sgt. Mike MacDonald.
A van, which did not have the right-of-way, was attempting to cross Halsted against traffic when it was t-boned by another vehicle, MacDonald said. The driver of the van fled before abandoning the vehicle two blocks away.
The man then fled on foot, attempting to elude police, MacDonald said. He ran into a Jewel grocery at 17705 Halsted St. where he collapsed from an apparent heart attack, MacDonald said.
The man, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as Mark Letke, 49, had an active DUI warrant out for his arrest and was driving on a revoked and suspended license, MacDonald said.
Letke was pronounced dead at 10:28 a.m. Thursday at Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, according to the medical examiner's office.
The driver of the vehicle that struck Letke's van was not injured.
An autopsy is scheduled for later Friday.
