A 13-year-old girl from the Far South Side was in fair condition Tuesday morning after being hit by a bullet intended for someone else.
The shooting happened around 10:40 p.m. Monday at 10927 S. Racine Ave., police News Affairs Officer John Henry said.
The victim was hit when shots were fired from the alley, Henry said.
The suspect was chasing and shooting at another man and the girl was most likely not the intended target, according to police News Affairs Officer David Banks.
The girl was wounded in the abdomen and taken to the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital in fair condition.
At the same time and location, a 22-year-old man was shot in the elbow while exiting his vehicle. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with injuries that are not considered serious, according to Banks.
It was not known whether that man was an intended target, but he was not the man being chased by the shooter, the officer said.
Residents say gangs have been taking over their neighborhood.
"Tonight, it just went a little bit too far, and really, I don't know what's going to happen from right about now, because the summer is coming, and to me, I think more police should be over here," said neighbor Florence Johnson.
No one was in custody as of 5 a.m. Tuesday.
