Plans Called Off For Gay-Friendly High School
Supporters Hope To Resubmit Plan Next Year
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
Plans for the city's first high school devoted to the needs of gay and lesbian students have been called off for now.
The design team of the new school has asked the Chicago Public Schools for more time to work on the plans. The school had been proposed for construction on the campus of the Greater Lawndale-Little Village School for Social Justice, 3120 S. Kostner Ave.
The school was originally to be called the Pride Campus, but the proposed name was later changed to the Social Justice Solidarity High School.
The school will welcome gays and lesbians along with students who've been victims of bullying and harassment.
A similar school in New York, called Harvey Milk High School, opened in 2003.
The Chicago Board of Education was to vote on the proposal for the school on Wednesday, but now the plans for the school have been called off.
Supporters hope to resubmit the proposal sometime next year.
