Gas Leak In Hammond Forces Home Evacuations

HAMMOND, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A contractor hit a gas main Thursday afternoon in Hammond, Ind., prompting a plume of gas to spew out for several hours.

Emergency crews responded to the gas leak at 169th Street and Ridgeland Avenue about 4 p.m., when a contractor hit an 8-inch steel gas main, Northern Indiana Public Service Company spokesman Jim Fitzer said.

The contractor damaged the gas main, prompting gas to blow out, Fitzer said. The gas was shut down at 8:30 p.m. after NIPSCO crews worked to isolate the area where the gas was spewing out. They were able to put a valve on the main and shut it down after several hours, he said.

He said there were no immediate reports of injuries.

Hammond police and fire department personnel were not available to comment on the incident Thursday night.
