Gary Sinise dropped in on Operation Support Our Troops Illinois to sign care packages and welcome home returning soldiers.

Award-winning actor and Chicago native Gary Sinise gave some local soldiers a welcome home they won't soon forget on Monday, and announced a summer event that will raise lots of money for the troops.
With an Addison warehouse as the backdrop, movie and TV star Gary Sinise dropped in on Operation Support Our Troops Illinois to sign care packages being sent over to troops and welcome home returning soldiers. It's been a labor of love for the CSI: NY star since 9/11.
"Clearly our defenders here are on the front lines between us and some dangerous times ahead," Sinise said. "So what can I do as a celebrity? I can do the USO thing. I can support grassroots organizations that are helping to keep our defenders strong."
Sinise's Lt. Dan Band, named after his character in Forrest Gump, has headlined the USO Ball in Chicago the last several years. And this July, the band will be back to play "Rockin for the Troops" 2009 in Wheaton.
"Part of the mission of the band, or a big percentage of what we do, is supporting organizations like Operation Support Our Troops, or going out and playing on military bases," Sinise said.
For the multi-tasking Sinise, it's all about sending a serious message in an entertaining environment.
"It's a big operation but we are getting a lot done, and I think we're doing some good and having some fun at the same time," Sinise said.
