Garrett Popcorn Stays On Michigan A Little Longer
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
A Chicago landmark gets a new lease on life, so to speak.
The Garrett Popcorn store on Michigan Avenue was supposed to close Saturday, but CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports the company says it's received an extension on its lease.
The crunchy taste of Garrett Popcorn on Michigan Avenue is still drawing hungry customer on the very day it was supposed to close.
"I was really shocked to see that they're going to close this location," said customer Molly Delaney. "I used to live in Chicago, lived here for 25 years. Now I live out in Maine. And every time I come back, I have to stop at Garrett's."
The store is making way for a new Ritz-Carlton Hotel.
Garrett's has had posters up to say goodbye, thanking customers for 25 years, but some didn't know about the coming closure until Saturday.
Garrett lovers are chomping at the chance to get their popcorn fix here on Michigan Avenue. And now, they'll have more time. This store will be open for a little over a week.
Employees have noticed more business popping up. Even though the company has four other stores in the city, visitors and Chicago residents alike share a certain appetite for the "flagship" location and the sweet, buttery, salty flavors here.
"They're buying a lot of tins -- make them last another three weeks,' said Garrett's employee Jeffrey Meade.
He says he and other employees will be transferred to other Garrett stores.
Garrett Popcorn is working to put a new store on Michigan Avenue sometime soon. The company plans to open locations at O'Hare Airport this summer.
