Reputed Gang Leader Shot Dead On West Side

Four Corner Hustlers Leader Was Reportedly Having House Appraised At The Time

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― An alleged high-ranking Chicago gang member was gunned down Thursday afternoon while standing outside a West Side residence that police believe he was having appraised, authorities said.

Police arrested three suspects after a short chase and also seized two weapons within minutes of the shooting in the 3800 block of West Flournoy in the West Lawndale neighborhood.

Charges against all three "are still pending,'' police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien said at 10:30 a.m.

Killed was Ray Washington, an alleged leader of the Four Corner Hustler gang for at least seven years, police said. An appraiser who was with Washington also was shot, but is expected to live.

According to records and law enforcement sources, Washington, 38, has several addresses in the Chicago area and was known to purchase properties. His address was listed in the 1900 block of Browning Court in Highland Park, although it is unclear whether that was his current home.

Washington, a convicted felon, has an arrest record that includes narcotics and weapons violations, according to records. His name also surfaced in major mortgage fraud investigations involving upper-level gang members, a source said.

Washington and the appraiser were shot at 1:30 p.m. while standing in the 3800 block of West Flournoy. Police think Washington was there to buy property and was shot over gang issues, Gang Enforcement Section Cmdr. Leo Schmitz said.

Washington was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital at 2:17 p.m., a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.

Harrison District tactical officers heard the shots and saw the gunmen getting into a car. Other officers, including gang enforcement teams, joined the chase. The suspects were arrested a short distance away after running from the car.

"They did a murder in plain view in the middle of day,'' Schmitz said. "And we got 'em. We were on them. That's what our job is.''
