Fire Breaks Out At Rear Of Massive Strip Mall

Moving Box, Supply Warehouse Damaged By Burning Truck Inside

CHICAGO (CBS) ― A major fire broke out early Thursday in a wholesale facility at the back of the massive strip mall along the Chicago River's North Branch.

The fire broke out in a wholesale moving box and supply company in the strip mall at 1880 W. Fullerton Ave., between the North Branch and the intersection with Elston and Damen avenues.

The blaze originated in a tractor trailer on the loading dock about 50 feet inside the building, which is at an industrial park at the north end of the strip mall.

The building is filled with cardboard and other combustible materials. The sprinkler system kept the fire in check by the sprinkler system, but spread into the roof.

The strip mall at 1880 W. Fullerton also houses WhirlyBall, Cosmo's designer suits, My Gym children's fitness center, and Chicago Party Supply Company. None of these businesses were damaged in the fire.

Busy Fullerton Avenue was shut down between Damen Avenue and the North Branch.
