Freight Train Derails In Kankakee County
GRANT PARK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
Residents of the Kankakee County community of Grant Park who were evacuated following Sunday night's train derailment are back in their homes after officials determined liquid leaking from the train was not hazardous.
The derailment happened just before 8 p.m. near 100 E. Taylor St. in Grant Park, about 50 miles south of Chicago, said Ken McCabe, Chief of Deputies for the Kankakee County Sheriff's office.
Twenty cars derailed, and two of those cars were tankers carrying a "residual amount" of denatured alcohol, according to a press release from the Kankakee County Sheriff's Office.
As of Monday morning, all roads and crossings were open in Grant Park. One of the rail lines is expected to be open by 8 p.m. Monday, the release said.
The initially unknown liquid leaking from the train prompted a hazardous materials response, causing emergency crews to evacuate "a few blocks" of homes where the liquid was leaking, McCabe said. The residents were taken to a local high school while crews worked to secure the scene.
McCabe said no injuries were reported as of 9:45 p.m.
