Investigators say three Chicago students who drowned in the Fox River were 25 yards from shore when their boats sank.
Officials said Saturday that the three were on a leadership retreat in suburban Algonquin on Friday with 28 other students when they snuck out of a dorm and pushed paddle boats into the Fox River. Those who died were 17-year-old Melvin Choice, 18-year-old Jimmy Avant and 16-year-old Adrian Jones.
Illinois Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman Stacey Solano says over the next few days authorities will interview the nine trip chaperones and 16 students who left the dorm.
Solano says officials must still confirm that the boats sank because plugs had been pulled from their bottoms in preparation for winter.
