1 Killed In 4-Semi Accident On I-80
MINOOKA, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
A truck driver has been killed in a crash that involved four semis and has closed all lanes eastbound lanes of I-80 near southwest suburban Minooka late Monday afternoon.
The crash occurred on I-80 just east of Ridge Road where traffic in the eastbound lanes had backed up, according to Joliet District Illinois State Police. A semi carrying steel piping failed to stop and struck a grain hauler, starting a chain reaction, a release from the ISP said.
The driver of the semi hauling the steel has died of injuries from the crash, state police said. It was unknown as of 5 p.m. if the steel hauler's semi contained any additional occupants.
One other person injured in the crash was taken to a hospital in Joliet.
As of about 5 p.m. crews were slowly removing the vehicles from the lanes.
All eastbound lanes were blocked and are expected to be closed for up to three more hours as crews clean up a large amount of grain and steel piping that spilled onto the highway, the release said.
Traffic is being diverted off at Route 47 and alternate routes would include U.S. 6 to the south and Route 52 to the north, the release said.
Westbound lanes of I-80 were not affected and traffic appears to be moving well, the release said.
