Chicago Ford Plant To Eliminate 600 Part-Time Jobs

CHICAGO (AP) ― Ford Motor Company says it's cutting 600 part-time jobs at its Chicago assembly plant when it drops one of its two shifts by early November.

The automaker also says an unspecified number of hourly and salaried employees could lose their jobs at the plant, which employs about 2,200 people. And Ford says some jobs may be eliminated at the company's Chicago Heights stamping plant, which produces body panels for the vehicles made in Chicago.

Ford says the drop to one shift comes because of dramatically falling sales. This week, the company reported sales in August fell more than 26 percent from the same month last year.

The plant on Chicago's southeast side makes the Ford Taurus, Ford Taurus X crossover, the Mercury Sable and the Lincoln MKS.
