Fireworks Go Off Early, Setting Fire To Garage

PALOS PARK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A southwest suburban man arrested Wednesday after his stash of holiday fireworks accidentally went off, setting fire to his garage.

Daniel Butler, 62, of the 300 block of Lakeland in an unincorporated area of Palos Park, was charged with possession of fireworks following the garage fire at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office.

Sheriff's police assisting with the fire call were informed that the fire had been started by fireworks which were stored next to the garage, according to a release from the sheriff's office.
Initial reports indicate the fireworks were being stored outside against a garage wall, next to a generator that automatically turned on, creating enough heat to ignite the fireworks, the release said.

The Palos Park Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire while the sheriff's police Bomb Squad removed the remaining fireworks, which included a dozen four-inch mortars and two three-inch mortars, the release said.

Butler is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 11 in Bridgeview.
