Firefighters Injured In Engine Crash In Old Town

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Several firefighters and bystanders were hurt when a fire truck ran into a car and then into a building in Old Town Thursday afternoon.

A man who was inside when the fire engine hit says things really shook on impact.

"All of a sudden there's this big bang. The building shook and my chair actually lifted right up off the floor," witness Marv Edelstein said. "It was an incredible force." He said immediately after the accident he ran outside.

"A fire started underneath the fire engine," he said. "I called on my cell phone. Then finally some ambulances came, some police came."

The Fire Department says one of their engines and a car collided at Division and Wells street. The fire truck clipped the corner of the building. Five firefighters were hurt. So were two people in a car. They have non life-threatening injuries but went to area hospitals.

One woman who witnessed the crash watched as rescue workers went to help the 55-year-old nanny and the 6-year-old girl who were in the car. She was moved to tears.

"It's sad just to see that. The little girl, she was crying. She was so scared, so frightened," said witness Kathy Barthold. The cops had her, and they were holding her and they were trying to calm her down."

The streets were wet at the time of the crash and the fire engine was on its way to a medical call. People heard the sirens. At this time, it is unclear who hit whom. That is under investigation.

Police are looking at tape possibly from a city camera in the area. They hope it sheds some light on the situation.
