Feared Fire Turns Out To Be Typical Popcorn Smell
Bystander Calls 911 After Mistaking Smell At Garrett Popcorn For Smoke
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
Fire crews raced down the streets of the Loop Wednesday morning prepared for a high-rise fire, but it turned out only the typical smell of popcorn.
Someone called 911 after smelling smoke outside the Garrett Popcorn shop at 26. W. Randolph St., adjoining the Ford Center of the Performing Arts Oriental Theatre.
Around 9:30 a.m., the Fire Department sent out a full high-rise response. A fleet of fire trucks and ambulances converged at the corner of Dearborn and Randolph streets in case of a major fire.
But it turned out that the 911 caller had only smelled popcorn cooking at Garrett, and there had been nothing out of the ordinary.
The Fire Department sends out extra equipment in the event of a high-rise fire, which has proven life-saving in many instances. The current high-rise firefighting procedures were implemented in reforms following the fire that killed six people in 2003 at the Cook County Administration Building downtown.
