Lisa Stebic's Family Comes Out For Fundraiser Walk
PLAINFIELD, Ill. (CBS) ―
A crowd of supporters filled the streets of downtown Plainfield Sunday afternoon to push for justice.
It was a fundraiser walk held in honor of Lisa Stebic the 37-year-old mother who disappeared in April 2007. And it was the first time Stebic's parents shared their private sorrow in public, as CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports.
About 200 people participated in the two-mile walk where Lisa Stebic's family released doves.
"We send our love on the wings of these doves to find Lisa wherever she may be, letting Lisa know she will always be remembered and to give her peace," said Stebic's mother Judy Ruttenberg.
Stebic disappeared a year ago Wednesday. Hers is a case that pushed her friends, family and a crowd of supporters onto the streets of Plainfield Sunday for "Lisa's Walk."
"You have opened your hearts to us and we feel honored. We consider all of you to be part of our extended family," said Stebic's father Lawrence Ruttenberg.
The details of how Stebic vanished still puzzle investigators.
"As far as the investigation, we are getting leads coming in everyday," said Plainfield Police Det. Carianne Siegel. "We are doing consistent follow up with every lead."
"We do believe that she is a victim of foul play. It's been a year. We know she wouldn't have just left her children," said family spokesperson Melanie Greenberg.
And even though those thoughts weigh on the minds of Stebic's loved ones, they believe they will find the truth someday.
"We must succeed on Lisa's behalf," said Judy Ruttenberg. "We need to know what happened. Her children deserve to know what really happened to their mother. We weep for our daughter, we weep for what could have been."
Proceeds from Sunday's event will go to Guardian Angel Community Services. It's an agency that offers domestic violence services. Stebic's family says it's a way to thank the public for its support.
