Police Find Body 12 Miles Away From Severed Feet

SLIDESHOW: Did You Know? Stars From Chicago!

MATTESON, Ill. (CBS) ― Police have found the body that goes with a pair of human feet found on a south suburban roadway Friday night.

The body of a white male in his 40's was found Sunday around 4:15 p.m.by a passerby in an industrial area in Alsip at 123rd St. and Laverne Avenue, county police spokeswoman Penny Mateck said.

The location was about 12 miles from the feet that were found at Vollmer Road and Keystone Avenue in Matteson -- near Saint James Hospital and Health Centers in Olympia Fields -- about 9:30 p.m. Friday, according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

County police spokeswoman Penny Mateck said, "The body had injuries consistent with our case on Friday."

The body was that of a white male, who remains unidentified as of 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

"I just couldn't believe what happened, it turned out to be a body with no legs," said Jim Kozola.

Sunday, disbelief turned to fear when police swarmed the field adjacent to his mother's house.

"The guy who found the body was on a motorcycle just riding around and he thought it was a Halloween costume. He just went a little bit closer and found there were flies around it," Bob Kozola said.

Kozola says the body was there since Saturday afternoon when a neighbor saw it a short distance away. Two women were walking in Unincorporated Rich Township near Matteson Friday when they saw the feet - severed from the knee down - and called police, Mateck said.

"She was walking her dog and she thought it was a homeless guy just sleeping there. The dog went over by the body and she pulled it back," Kozola said.

The feet did not appear to be in the road for very long and there was not much blood found in the area, Mateck said.

Now it's up to investigators to find out how a man ended up in pieces.

"It's crazy, because this is a quiet town - nothing really happens, so this is kinda scary," said Kozola.

County police are working with the Cook County Medical Examiner's office to identify the body. The cause of the man's death was unknown Sunday night, and Mateck said investigators are awaiting autopsy results Monday to determine the cause of death.
