Dan Ryan Driver Has Very Close Call With Farm Tool
5-Pound Metal Pick Crashed Through Amy Stark's Windshield, Just Inches From Her Head
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
A driver had an extremely close call along the Dan Ryan Expressway when a heavy tool smashed through her windshield as she was driving Wednesday night.
CBS 2's Vince Gerasole reports Amy Stark managed to keep her cool when a farm hook crashed into her car, just inches from her head, as she was headed south of Roosevelt after a Cubs game.
"It was terrifying, especially when you see what it looked like," Stark said.
Stark said the yard-long metal pick, looking like something out of a horror movie, "exploded right through" the windshield and covered her and the passenger seat with glass.
She was at the time driving home to Hyde Park from a Cubs game on the North Side. Stark said the road was empty except for a nearby taxi.
"I honked to try and get their attention cause if they were missing a door it was through my windshield," Stark said.
Through a Google search Stark identified the projectile as a 5-pound farmer's pick used to bale hay.
"I still have no idea where it came from," she said. "I don't think they're laying around Chicago so i have no idea where it came from."
In spite of the shattered glass Stark did manage to stay calm enough to drive 6 miles home, without stopping.
Asked how she kept her cool, Stark said, "I don't know if you think asked me before if I cold keep cool I don't think I could have done that."
"I actually became more and more terrified as time progressed," she added. "Initially I was shocked, I couldn't be terrified but as I kept driving and saw how close it came to me and being hit in the head I became really terrified."
Stark filed a report with the state police, who tell CBS 2 they've found no evidence of foul play. Troopers say the pick may have fallen to the roadway and was kicked onto Stark's Honda from a passing car.
