Extra-Alarm Fire Destroys Pullman Building
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
A Far South Side building collapsed following an extra-alarm blaze Wednesday afternoon that sent plumes of smoke into the air that were visible from the downtown area.
The fire was reported at 1:40 p.m. in a one-story vacant commercial brick and steel building at 117th Street and Front Avenue, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Joe Roccasalva. A 2-11 alarm, which requests extra assistance, was called shortly after crews arrived to find the building engulfed in flames.
"In a matter of seconds, two sides of the building collapsed," Roccasalva said.
By the time the fire was extinguished at 2:26 p.m., the building had experienced a "total collapse." Firefighters were in the process of entering to complete a search when the building collapsed, he said.
The building had been vacant for years and there were no reports of injuries, Roccasalva said.
Firefighters could see smoke from the blaze three blocks away at the fire station at 114th Street and Michigan Avenue, Roccasalva said. The smoke was also visible from the downtown area.
The cause of the fire was unclear and remained under investigation Wednesday afternoon.
