City Of Evanston Bans Video Gambling
Evanston Is First Major Illinois City To Do So
EVANSTON, Ill. (CBS) ―
Evanston has become the first major Illinois city to ban video gambling.
The Chicago Tribune reported Tuesday morning that the City Council in the near north suburban city voted unanimously to ban video poker machines at bars and restaurants.
A state law approved in May allows five computerized gambling machines in any establishment licensed to sell alcohol. The Illinois Gaming Board says video gambling should bring the state millions of dollars in revenue.
But many local governments can opt out.
Evanston municipal leaders said the revenue wouldn't outweigh the social cost of gambling addictions.
DuPage County has banned video gambling for its unincorporated areas. Rosemont and Country Club Hills have also issued bans, and calls have mounted for bans in unincorporated Will and Cook counties. Also, the Naperville City Council is meeting Tuesday night to discuss a possible ban there.
