Buyer For Evanston House Where Bodies Were Found

Bodies Of 3 Siblings Were Found Inside In 2008

EVANSTON, Ill. (CBS) ― A morbid past didn't stop new owners from buying a house a few blocks from the lake shore in Evanston.

The house in the 1200 block of Judson Avenue made headlines in November 2008, when the skeletal remains of siblings Anita D. Bernstorff, born in 1910; Frank A. Bernstorff, born in 1920; and Elaine B. Bernstorff, 1916, were found inside.

Elaine B. Bernstorff had not been seen since the early 1980s, when she was believed to be in her 60s. Anita Bernstorff was last seen alive in May 2008 at age 98, and her brother Frank was last seen in April 2003 at age 83, according to the medical examiner's office.

Another sister, Margaret Bernstorff, then 90, was still living in the house when police found the bodies. She was moved out of the house and into a senior care facility after the discovery.

The house later went up for sale, and within a week of when it went on the market, an Evanston couple made an offer, Crain's Chicago Real Estate Daily reported Tuesday.

Weichert Realtors-Lakeshore Partners co-owner Sandra Brown told Crain's the couple knew about the bodies found in the house, but "weren't put off." She declined to provide the names of the buyers or the purchase price to the newspaper.

The 2,054-square foot Victorian was built in the 1890s, and features four fireplaces, Crain's reported.
