Bond was set at $1 million Wednesday for a South Side man charged after a DNA match with a sexual assault that occurred in April in the South Side Englewood neighborhood.
DNA positively linked Joseph Haynes, 26, of the 2000 block of West 67th Place, to the rape, which occurred on April 2, police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said. Police arrested Haynes at his home about 5 p.m. Tuesday, and charged with criminal sexual assault.
Judge Donald Panarese set bond at $1 million on Wednesday and scheduled a preliminary hearing for Dec.15, according to Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton.
On April 2 at about 4 a.m., a 29-year-old woman was going to a store in the 1800 block of West 69 Street when she was approached by two men -- including Haynes -- who tried to rob her, Perez said. They dragged her to a nearby location and sexually assaulted her.
She reported the incident and was taken to an area hospital to complete a rape kit.
Later that morning, police found two men near the scene with descriptions matching the assailants. When police attempted to make contact, the men fled on foot.
Haynes got away, while the other man, identified as Edward Taylor, 19, of the 6800 block of South Wolcott Avenue, was arrested and charged with felony criminal sexual assault with a weapon and misdemeanor aggravated assault with a weapon, Perez said.
Taylor's case is pending before Judge Diane Gordon Cannon, with his next court appearance scheduled for Jan. 11, Simonton said.
