Crash On South Side Sends 12 To Area Hospitals

CHICAGO (STNG) ― An erratic driver caused 12 people to be hospitalized Wednesday night when their vehicle crashed into several other vehicles in what police call a "lengthy accident" on the South Side.

Four ambulances were dispatched to Western Avenue between 83rd and 87th streets about 7:35 p.m., according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Rich Rosado.

A vehicle traveling southbound in the 8300 block of South Western Avenue struck multiple vehicles heading in the same direction, police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Urisitti said.

The vehicle came to rest near a fence on Western Avenue, and the driver was taken into police custody, Ursitti said.

One person was taken from 85th Street and Western Avenue to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in fair condition, Rosado said.

Crews took 11 others from the 8700 block of South Western to hospitals as well, Rosado said.

Of the 11, two people were taken in critical condition to Christ Medical Center, five people were taken in fair condition to Holy Cross Hospital, two people were taken in fair condition to Mount Sinai Hospital and two others were taken in fair condition to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, Rosado said.

Ursitti said none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.

Chicago Lawn District police called the crash a "lengthy accident," but had no further details immediately available.
