The police chief is crediting "around the clock" work by detectives as the key to the arrest of two men who have been charged with robbing two Elmhurst College students last week.
The male students, who are in their early 20s, were on their way home from class about 9:40 p.m. on Oct. 27 when they were approached by two men near Second and Elm streets in the western suburb.
The offenders punched the victims in the head, knocking one to the ground. When he tried to stand, the robber produced a black, semiautomatic pistol, which was later discovered to be a replica gun, police said.
A cell phone was taken from each victim, and a walletwas also taken. But when the offenders realized the wallet only contained receipts, Elmhurst Police Cmdr. Dan Buenz said they left it behind.
Brandon P. Johnson, 20, of 704 N. Howard Ave., Elmhurst; and Darnell S. Olive, 18, a former Elmhurst resident who lives on the 2100 block of West Smethwick Lane in Hoffman Estates, were arrested Friday evening and charged with aggravated robbery.
Buenz expects more charges to follow. They are being held in DuPage County Jail.
The only reported injury was a cut to one of the victim's ears.
"Street crimes of this nature are very rare in Elmhurst," Police Chief Steven Neubauer said in a statement Tuesday. "Our detectives worked around the clock for three days to identify and apprehend these two robbery suspects."
