Elgin Residents Flee Fire, Reported Blast

ELGIN, Ill. (STNG) ― Residents of a block on the city's northeast side were ordered to evacuate their homes shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday after authorities investigating smoke in the area reported a possible explosion. The residents were allowed to return to their homes about an hour later, according to unofficial reports.

Authorities set up a perimeter and were blocking off streets around the area, which according to initial reports was surrounded by Jefferson Avenue, North Grove Avenue, McBride Street and Riverside. The Centre of Elgin reportedly took in residents displaced by the situation.

There also were reports that firefighters initially were having difficulty getting water from hydrants in the area.
