3 Women Receive Electrical Shocks Near Sears Tower

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Three women received a "very minor electrical shock'' after heating grates used to melt snow from the sidewalks outside of the Sears Tower apparently malfunctioned Friday morning in the Loop.

The incident occurred at 8:50 a.m. at 233 S. Wacker Dr. [Sears Tower], when heating grates used to melt snow off the sidewalk apparently malfunctioned, according to a Central District police lieutenant.

Three women received minor electrical shocks, the lieutenant said. A woman with a sprained ankle was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment, police said.

"When she got shocked she lost her balance and twisted her ankle,'' said the lieutenant.

The two other women refused medical treatment.

"Sears Tower always puts safety first, so building engineers immediately turned off the electric snow melt sidewalk system as a precaution. An investigation found that the sidewalk heating system was indeed the source of the current," said Tom Dempsey, vice president and general manager at Sears Tower, in a statement. "There is no risk of a recurrence as the snow melt system remains shut down while repairs are made to ensure the highest level of safety for our tenants and visitors."
