Cops: Suspect Beat Elderly Man To Death With Bat

CHICAGO (STNG) ― A man is in custody Friday afternoon for allegedly bludgeoning an 86 year-old man -- who died Thursday -- in the head with a baseball bat at his West Side home earlier this month.

An autopsy Friday revealed George Davis, 86, of 2710 W. Jackson Blvd. died of craniocerebral injuries and blunt head trauma, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, which ruled the death a homicide.

Davis, who was beaten at his home, was pronounced dead at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the medical examiner's office.

The man in police custody, whose name was not released, allegedly used a baseball bat to batter Davis on the evening of July 6 after they were involved in a verbal altercation, according to police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti.

The motive for the attack was not known, she said.

Ursitti was uncertain whether formal charges had been filed as of early Friday afternoon.

Harrison Area detectives are investigating.
