Husband And Wife Killed, 6 Hurt In Kane Co. Crash
ELBURN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
A husband and wife from St. Charles were killed Saturday morning in a multi-vehicle crash in which six other people were injured near northwest suburban Elburn, authorities said.
Wade E. Thomas, 44, and Denise A. Thomas, 45, were killed about 8:30 a.m. at Route 47 and Smith Road, the Kane County Sheriff's Department said.
A third person was transported by Flight for Life helicopter to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove to the trauma unit there. Five others were taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva.
The sheriff's office did not identify any of the other injured, but said they did not appear to have life-threatening injuries.
All of those injured were motorcycle riders, part of two clubs that met up to ride up to Wisconsin for the day. The Sheriff's Office said it appears none of the riders was wearing a helmet.
The accident shut off Route 47 between Main Street near Sugar Grove and Hughes Road near Elburn until 3:10 p.m. Saturday.
According to the Sheriff's Office, a black Cadillac was traveling south on Route 47 and was stopped, waiting to turn left onto Smith Road. A Honda Civic was stopped behind the Cadillac. Both vehicles were waiting for the motorcycles, traveling north, to go past the intersection.
A Toyota Alera, also traveling south on Route 47, came up behind the stopped vehicles and failed to stop, striking the rear of the Honda. The impact caused the Honda to enter the northbound lane and into the group of motorcycles.
The sheriff's office said it appears that six of the motorcycles either hit the Honda or were hit by the Honda.
The Toyota eventually also struck the rear of the Cadillac.
The driver of the Toyota, Alia N. Bernard, 24, of Aurora, was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
As of Saturday evening, the sheriff's office said it was unclear was caused Bernard to fail to stop, and if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
