Man Pleads Not Guilty To Edgewater Motel Murder

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A 57-year-old South Side man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to the murder of a woman whose body was found stuffed in the closet of an Edgewater motel room.

Edward Gibson pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and one count of concealment of a homicide before Cook County Associate Judge Lawrence Fox, according to Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin.

Gibson, of the 7700 block of South Shore Drive, is accused of killing Maratta Walker, 45, on May 20 after he was released from the Metropolitan Correctional Center.

A manager at the Chicago Lodge at 920 W. Foster Ave. discovered the body after going to the room to collect on a bill, according to clerk at the hotel.

The manager walked into the room and noticed the dark-colored carpet was wet, and later realized the wetness was spilled blood, the clerk said. The manager then opened the closet and found the naked body of a woman.

An autopsy showed Walker suffered blunt force trauma from an assault, and her death was ruled a homicide.

Gibson is scheduled for a status hearing Oct. 1, Conklin said.
