Man Charged With Killing Woman In Edgewater Motel

CHICAGO (STNG) ― A 57-year-old South Side man has been charged with the murder of a woman whose body was found stuffed in a closet of an Edgewater motel room in May.

A manager at the Chicago Lodge, 920 W. Foster Ave., discovered the body of the woman after going to the motel room to collect on a bill, Matt Wyatt, 29, a part-time desk clerk at the motel said.

The manager walked into the room about noon on May 20, and noticed the dark-colored carpet was wet, and later realized the wetness was from spilled blood, Wyatt said. The manager then opened the closet door and found the naked body of the woman.

An autopsy later found the woman, Maratta Walker, had suffered blunt force trauma from an assault.

Edward Gibson, of the 7700 block of South Shore Drive was arrested and charged Tuesday with first degree murder, after he was released from the Metropolitan Correctional Center, according to a release from police News Affairs.

Gibson is scheduled to appear in Violence Court (Br. 66) for a hearing at noon Wednesday.
