Woman Finds 'Nazi' Scratched Onto Her Car
Tires Also Slashed On Car In Edgewater Condo Building
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
It's far more disturbing than just run-of-the-mill vandalism.
A woman in the city's Edgewater neighborhood says someone slashed her tires and scratched the word "Nazi" into the trunk of her Cadillac.
The woman lives in a condominium in the 5900 block of North Sheridan Road. She was in the building's parking garage about 4 p.m. when she saw the word 'Nazi' scratched onto the trunk of her 2008 Cadillac, according to a Lincoln District police sergeant.
She got into the Cadillac and started driving, but after traveling about a mile and a half, the car became disabled at 4926 N. Broadway. She then discovered that two of the car's tires had been slashed and had "big cuts" in them, according to the sergeant.
The woman contacted police about 11 p.m. and indicated that a man who lives in her building may have been responsible, though no one saw him vandalize the car.
The man is "always causing trouble with the condo association,'' and other neighbors have had "problems" with him, the sergeant said, adding that he was apparently mad at the woman and does not get along with other people in the building.
The sergeant said the woman who owns the Cadillac is from Germany and has a German accent.
The parking garage does not have surveillance cameras and no citations or charges have been filed, the sergeant said.
How the crime will be classified has yet to be decided, police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said early Monday afternoon.
"Whether this was a hate crime is undetermined," he said early Monday afternoon.
