A new mural in the Bryn Mawr underpass below Lake Shore Drive is the latest installment in a series of public art projects intended to capture the essence of Edgewater.
The bricolage mural on the south side of the underpass is the centerpiece of the Growing 2008 community art project. It is being installed by artists, children and seniors from the neighborhood, with mosaic pieces created by neighborhood residents at block club events and at an Earth Day celebration this spring.
The mural is a companion piece to a similar artwork on the north side of the underpass made from a mosaic of broken glass and ceramic, called Living 2007.
Participating artist Tracy Van Duinen said the mural was intended to represent the diverse and close-knit community of Edgewater.
"Growing 2008 is supposed to reflect the building of the community here in Edgewater," Van Duinen said. "All the metaphor is about family and kind of growing roots, so that's why we're calling it Growing 2008."
Among the features is a depiction of a community garden featuring ceramic butterflies and flowers that were made by community residents.
The mural was created by a partnership between the Chicago Public Art Group, Ald. Mary Ann Smith (48th), and the Alternatives Inc. youth program. There are plans to create a mural on the Foster Avenue underpass next year, and on part of the Lawrence Avenue underpass in 2010.
