Chicagoans Get Green For Earth Day
Volunteer, Educational Events Across City And Suburbs
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
With the economy remaining in a state of woe and people trying to save money, some Earth Day events might be a little scaled back from last year, or from 2007 when the green movement became the rage. But volunteer work, educational opportunities and other events are still going on across the Chicago area.
There are events all over the city and suburbs to promote helping the environment and maintaining the earth for our own generations and those ahead. Here are just a few:
North Central College in Naperville has an Earth Day event with recycling, exhibits on sustainable initiatives, and discussions on green building, until 1 p.m.
The
North Park Village Nature Center one of the few places within the city limits where you can actually find wild deer in their natural habitats is holding a Volunteer Day where participants will remove invasive plants and maintain trails and trees. The event is in progress from 9 a.m. until noon; the entrance to North Park Village is at Pulaski Road and Ardmore Avenue on the Northwest Side.
The
Lincoln Park Zoo is hosting a Party for the Planet with Earth Day and science activities at Café Brauer, 2021 N. Stockton Dr., starting at 10 a.m.
At the
Museum of Science and Industry, students from Bret Harte Elementary School are planting a sustainable garden for the Smart Home: Green + Wired house. That's also at 10 a.m.
The
Shedd Aquarium Great Lakes Team is hosting an Earth Day beach sweep at the North Avenue beach at 11:30 a.m.
Columbia College hosts an eco-fair with sustainable organizations and businesses showing green living options, starting at noon at the Conaway Center, 1104 S. Wabash Ave.
The
Morton Arboretum in Lisle is hosting "Earth Day Green Tea," an event showcasing artisan teas and blends. There is also an eco-fashion show. That starts at 1 p.m.
Schools in Oak Park are marking Earth Day with an anti-idling campaign. From 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., drivers will receive fact sheets, stickers, key chains and pencils encouraging them to turn off their engines during school pickup and dropoff times. The program, entitled "Idling Gets You Nowhere," is being held outside Whittier Elementary, 715 N. Harvey Ave.
At 4 p.m., the Chicago Park District hosts a cleanup effort in
Gage Park, 5630 S. Rockwell St.
National cover band
Maggie Speaks will have an Earth Day concert at 9 p.m. at the Hard Rock Café, 63 W. Ontario St.
Also at 9 p.m., the building still known as the Sears Tower will turn off its antenna lights, in an Earth Day energy-saving effort.
