Court Orders Special Judge In Early Voting Case
(CBS)
The battle over early voting locations in Northwest Indiana continues.
The state's Supreme Court issued an order today appointing a "special judge" in the case. The
Post-Tribune reports, that judge is Diane Kavadias Schneider, of the Lake County Superior Court. She sits in Hammond.
The order was signed by all five Indiana Supreme Court justices.
No word yet on if or when the that court might take any additional action.
Republicans are trying to block early voting at three locations, contending that opening the additional sites would lead to voter fraud. Voters in Northwest Indiana have been able to vote early in Crown Point, before the additional locations were opened on Tuesday.
Adding early voting centers is seen as a boon to the presidential candicancy of Barack Obama. Northwest Indiana is viewed as a Democratic stronghold in a state that typically votes Republican.
For the first time in over 40 years, Indiana is considered a battleground state for in the race for the White House.
For now, the polls in East Chicago, Gary and Hammond will stay open.
