Human Skeleton Found In Downers Grove

Skeleton Is Not Related To Peterson Or Stebic Cases

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― It may take police and the DuPage County Coroner's office some time to remove human skeletal remains that were found under accumulated snow and ice in a heavily wooded area in Downers Grove Thursday.

Police received a 911 call just before 1:30 p.m. Thursday from workers who were clearing brush in Lyman Woods, near 36th and Sterling Road in the western suburb, to check on what appeared to be human skeletal remains located approximately one-quarter mile inside the heavily wooded lot, police said.

Officers saw the remains, covered by snow and ice, when they got to the scene. The DuPage County Coroner's office was contacted. A deputy coroner and a pathologist responded to the scene, and the pathologist confirmed that the remains were human, a release from Downers Grove police said.

The age, race and sex of the remains could not immediately be determined, however.

Police and the coroner's office are currently working to remove the remains, which may take an extended period of time, because of the ice and weather conditions, the release said.

The cause of death will be unknown until a forensic examination can be conducted, the release said.

Police noted, however, that "there is no indication to suggest that the remains are connected with the Peterson or Stebic investigations."
