Distraught Son Confesses To Killing Mom In Dolton

DOLTON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― In what police are calling a "tragic" incident, the son of a woman found dead behind a garage near her south suburban home turned himself in to police Wednesday evening, confessing to killing his mother.

About 10 a.m., Dolton police responded to the 14800 block of South Ellis Avenue to conduct a well-being check on a woman living in the home, Dolton Police Chief Robert Fox said.

Arriving officers noticed a woman in her 50s face-down on the ground behind a garage near the home, Fox said. The woman had no pulse, and was dead on the scene.

A spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said the woman was found with a plastic bag over her head, and was dead on the scene.

Police initially searched the home for the woman's son, a man in his 20s with a history of mental and behavioral problems, Fox said. The son was not in the home, but showed up at the Dolton police station about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening.

"He turned himself in and gave a full confession," Fox said. "He said he killed his mother last night. It is really a tragic incident."

The son told police he was arguing with his mother before he choked her to death, Fox said. When he realized he couldn't move her body, he told officers he dragged it outside hoping it would appear that someone else committed the crime.

The son, who was on medication for his mental health issues, was distraught when talking with police.

Charges had not been filed against the man as of 7:30 p.m., Fox said.

Fox said police were waiting for a Thursday autopsy to determine the woman's official manner of death, and was not releasing her name pending the notification of all family members.
