Smoky Elevator Draws Fire Response On Diversey
Crowds Swell At Corner Of Diversey And Pine Grove
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
An elevator motor overheated and filled an apartment building with smoke Tuesday night on near Diversey Harbor, drawing a huge fire response Tuesday evening. No one was hurt.
The incident occurred about 9:15 p.m. at an apartment building at the intersection of Diversey Parkway and Pine Grove Avenue, according to Town Hall District police.
Police said an elevator motor overheated, filling the building with smoke.
Fire department emergency crews were on the scene for a "long time" as they searched for, but never found a fire, according to police.
But the incident drew enough fire equipment that Diversey had to be shut down between Hampden Court and Pine Grove Avenue. A crowd swelled in front of the building watching the scene, and a crowd of several dozen people also gathered in front of the Galway Bay tavern, 500 W. Diversey Pkwy. Many were asking each other what was going on.
The affected building houses the Grove Restaurant, a Seattle Sutton healthy eating center, and other businesses on the lower floor and several apartments above. A crowd also gathered
No injuries were reported and the incident was not considered suspicious.
