Dice Game At Church Turns Violent, 2 Teens Charged

CHICAGO (STNG) ― Bond was set at $450,000 Monday for a 16-year-old boy charged in the shooting of another teen at a church that also provides shelter to girls and young women in the South Side Washington Heights neighborhood.

Stephen Sephus, 16, and Brandon Hubbard, 15, have both been charged with armed robbery and attempted murder, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin said.

Cook County Judge Laura Sullivan set bond for Sephus at $450,000 on Monday. Bond was set at $250,00 for Hubbard on Sunday, Conklin said.

About 6:20 p.m. on July 1, a 15-year-old boy was shot near West 98th and South Throop streets, police News Affairs Officer David Banks said.

Prosecutors claim the shooting occurred after a dice game in the rectory of the Saint Margaret of Scotland at 9837 S. Throop St.

The victim apparently won money from Sephus who got angry and wanted his money back. Sephus allegedly told Hubbard to go through the victim's pocket and they took the boy's money and cell phone.

Sephus allegedly shot the victim in the hand and thigh.

Sephus was allegedly identified by three witnesses and identified as the shooter by Hubbard, Conklin said, citing court records.

Both men are scheduled to appear in court for a July 24 preliminary hearing.
