Three teens arrested in the beating death of a Chicago honor student have been formally indicted on first-degree murder charges.
The formal charges were filed Friday against 19-year-old Silvonus Shannon, 18-year-old Eugene Riley and 16-year-old Eric Carson,
Prosecutors claim they killed 16-year-old Derrion Albert on Sept. 24 during a melee captured on cell phone video. It shows Albert being struck with boards and kicked as he lay on a sidewalk.
Police have described the sophomore at Christian Fenger Academy High School as an innocent bystander caught up in a fight.
"It was a brutal and violent attack in which the victim was merely a bystander," Assistant State's Attorney Jodi Peterson said.
Earlier that morning, the ongoing fight led to a shooting outside the school, Peterson said. That led to a brawl near the school after classes finished shortly before 3 p.m.
The teen defendants are being held without bail. The judge Friday set their arraignment for Nov. 10.
Prosecutors dropped charges against a fourth teen earlier this week.
