Hastert Nearing 'Fighting Weight'

CHICAGO (AP) ― Congressman Dennis Hastert is getting ready for retirement by getting back into fighting shape.

The former House speaker and one-time high school wrestling coach has been working to slim down and says he has 10 more pounds to go before he reaches his "college fighting weight."

During an interview on WLS Radio's "The Don and Roma Morning Show," Hastert said it all started when someone asked him about his New Year's resolution and he blurted out that he planned to lose 80 pounds.

Hastert adds that his plan got a jump start when he lost 20 pounds while recovering from the gallbladder surgery he had in January.

The Illinois Republican isn't running again and says he'll give up his congressional seat by the first of the year.
